Operation Old Town

The case

A fictional Edinburgh firm is losing tenders it should win. Teams work the closes and the Grassmarket, exchange evidence and reach one verdict.

How the experience works

    Briefing

Your group is received together in Edinburgh, split into teams and briefed on the objective.

  2. 02

    Teams take the city

Each team works a different part of the route and holds information the others need.

  3. 03

    Negotiate and combine

Teams meet, trade what they hold and decide what the group is prepared to conclude.

  4. 04

    Debrief

The case closes with a live finale and an optional facilitated debrief on how the group worked.

Mixed languages, no problem
We had a team split across three countries. They ran it in English with two hosts able to switch, and the printed material came in both languages. Small detail, big difference to the people who'd have otherwise stayed quiet.

Nobody used the phrase team building once
Which is the highest compliment I can give it. Thirty-two people, five teams, everyone out in the city rather than in a hotel function room. The quieter members of my team ended up leading, because the puzzles need people who notice things rather than people who talk loudest.

Handled our size without it feeling like a cattle drive
We ran it for sixty-eight at a conference and my expectations were low. Multiple hosts, staggered starts, everyone converging on the same finish. The debrief at the end was short and actually landed — they tie it back to how the teams worked, not to a slide deck.
